Pre-production Hartwood Documentary

Brainstorming

When brainstorming for the documentary we wanted to continue coming up with ideas until we found something that we felt that we could approach creatively and in an individual way. Although we were stuck between two main ideas we eventually decided that shooting a documentary about Hartwood cemetery, a place near Glasgow with a deep backstory, Would be most accessible and interesting therefore we started to develop this idea further.

Proposal and pitch

I have experience in this area as it was something I did in college with a few different projects. Our main ideas for the documentary pitch that we wanted to get across was that we wanted to tell the story of those who are unable to tell the story for themselves because due to the nature of Hartwood they were forgotten. Our idea for the central climax of the film was to show at the end that there are over 1000 people with this similar story and how shocking this is. I used this idea of the forgotten names in the teaser that I edited simply with eery shots of the cemetery and names of real people appearing around the screen.

Pre-production

I am editing on the project therefore my involvement with preproduction is limited however I have put myself forward for some more logistical documents. Our main focus at the moment is coming up with a solid Storyboard that we don't need to completely stick to but will help us to form a coherent structure for the narrative. We have therefore arranged a meeting to plan out the visual aspects of the documentary and form a story which will keep the audience gripped and thinking.

Next steps

Once we have sorted the story board we will be thinking about production and the equipment we need to shoot the documentary as well as how were are going to get to and from the location. I am finding the planning of our documentary more complicated than other projects as documentaries in my opinion are far more unpredictable than narrative films.
